Government of Moscow

Мэр Москвы Ю.М. Лужков

«It is not a secret that greatness of the country is made not only from its size, military and economic power and political influence in the world. Achievements in science, culture, and, certainly, sport are very importance as well. Development of physical culture and sports is an issue of top priority in the policy of the Government of Moscow. The whole world may witness and is aware how much is done in our capital to improve the sport infrastructure, to prepare the reserve of sportsmen.»

Yuri Luzhkov, Mayor of Moscow

Moscow is rightfully one of the capitals of the global sport. Major international sports tournaments of high level are held in the city every year. Many sportsmen of Moscow rank among the elite of the global sport. Successes of athletes from Moscow at world, European and national championships evidence that the Moscow sport holds the leading position in the structure of the national sports movement.

Since the revival of Spartakiads young sportsmen from Moscow have won all the summer and winter Spartakiads for students and the youth of Russia. This proves that the capital has a very effective system of training the reserve of athletes.

There are world-famous sports facilities on the territory of Russia such as Luzhniki Olympic Complex, Olympiysky Sports Complex. Recently there have been built Megasport Ice Palace on the Khodynka Field, one of a kind in Europe, the ultramodern Krylatskoye Sports Complex and a sports palace located nearby. Despite economic difficulties, realization of the program of construction of close-vicinity fitness and sports facilities is being continued in the capital.

In the recent years all necessary organizational decisions on renewal and organization of work on popularizing physical culture with the population have been approved. Today it does not surprise anyone that neighborhood and district sports events are held regularly in the yards of the capital. The number of sports events organized in residential neighborhoods under the slogan "Come Out to Play!" is growing, the number of people attending sport clubs and groups in their neighborhoods is constantly increasing. Active efforts are made to develop disabled sports and create necessary conditions for it.

Everybody knows that victory depends not only on the experience and skills of the coach, not only on the sportsman's perseverance and will to win, but also in large part on training conditions and paraphernalia, and quality of medical care for athletes. That is why the most important task, that the city administration has set before itself, is implementation of new scientific solutions in the metropolitan sports industry.

The authorities of Moscow pay immense attention to popularizing of physical culture and sports, persistent advertising of projects and programs implemented in the city, formation of the positive image of the Muscovites actively engaging in physical and sporting activities and leading active lifestyles. Largely due to this we have packed sport arenas during sporting events, inflow of "newcomers' to sport schools, attractive image of the sporting industry on the whole.

Pursuant to the Order of the President of the Russian Federation of November 10, 2009 No. Pr-2997, from July 29 to August 1, 2010, the Annual International sport forum “Russia – Country of Sports” will be held in Moscow. Its main venue will be the territory of Luzhniki Olympic Complex.

To become a place for such important and large-scale event is an honor and great responsibility for the city. That is why preparations are already underway in Moscow. The headquarters of the Forum, where sessions of the task team on its organization and holding take place, is created in the capital. The Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov is the Deputy Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Forum. The Committee also includes representatives of the Ministry of Sport and Tourism of Russia, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Government of Moscow, and a number of other federal and regional executive authorities, sport organizations and business communities.
